The League of Wisconsin Municipalities invites you to apply for our Marketing Communications Specialist position.This is a rare opportunity to join a well‑known and respected 127‑year‑old nonpartisan, nonprofit association dedicated to supporting Wisconsin’s 608 cities and villages. Our membership comprises 190 Wisconsin cities and most of the state’s 415 villages, along with associate members, sponsors, and exhibitors who support municipal leadership. The League advocates, provides legal information, educates local officials, creates space for networking, and offers insurance to its members.Our relatively small, dedicated staff works collaboratively to provide legal information, advocacy at the state level, and education through publications, conferences, training, and networking opportunities.Position OverviewThe Marketing Communications Specialist plays a key role in promoting the League’s programs, services, events, and value to municipal and business members, sponsors, exhibitors, and other stakeholders. Working closely with the Director of Marketing, Communications & Events, this role helps translate organizational priorities into coordinated, multi‑channel marketing communications strategies and campaigns.This position combines strategic planning and independent execution, with responsibility for creating, managing, and delivering written and visual content across print and digital platforms. The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, and comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, mission‑driven environment.This role is based in our Madison, Wisconsin office with the opportunity to work up to two days a week remotely. Areas of ResponsibilityDevelop, manage, and execute marketing communications plans and campaigns that promote the League’s programs, services, events, publications, and membership valueCreate and maintain a strategic marketing and content calendar, aligning messaging across departments, audiences, and platformsLead content planning, production, and distribution for our monthly magazine, electronic newsletters and email marketing campaigns, website content, social media channels, and other print and digital materialsWrite, edit, and coordinate the development of clear, engaging content that reflects the League’s brand voice, mission, and nonpartisan roleCollaborate with League staff, members, and outside vendors (designers, printers, freelancers) to develop messaging, visuals, and materialsUpload, manage, and maintain website content using established content management schedules and standardsCoordinate branding initiatives, including managing League and League Insurance branded materials and marketing itemsEnsure consistency of messaging and visual identity across all communicationsTrack engagement and performance metrics (email, web, social) and use insights to refine communications approachesProvide communications and marketing support for League events, conferences, and educational programsOther projects and duties as assigned in support of the League’s broader missionRequired Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesBachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or a related field, or equivalent professional experienceA minimum of three years of professional experience in marketing, communications, public relations, or a related role (association, nonprofit or local government experience a plus)Demonstrated ability to develop and execute marketing communications plans and manage multiple projects simultaneouslyStrong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with attention to detail and toneExperience creating written and graphics-based content for both print and digital communicationsFamiliarity with email marketing, social media, and website content managementAbility to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and manage deadlines in a collaborative team environmentInterest in mission‑driven work and willingness to learn about local government and municipal issuesPreferred Experience and TrainingStrong project management skills and ability to prioritize competing deadlinesExperience working with marketing and design tools such as Constant Contact, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platformsComfortable collaborating across departments and with external partnersExperience producing or managing periodical publications or magazinesHighly skilled in Windows OS and Microsoft Office 365Familiarity with associations, local government, or public‑sector communicationsBenefits & PayThe League offers excellent health and other coverages through the Wisconsin Employee Trust Funds (ETF) and participates in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS). Additional benefits include paid holidays, vacation, and sick time.Salary range: $70,000–$80,000 annually, depending on skills and experience.
