LOCATION OF (12) POSITIONS TO BE FILLED: TENNESSEE WILDLIFE RESOURCES AGENCY (TWRA), MULTIPLE COUNTIES STATEWIDE SUMMARY: Under general supervision, is responsible for professional wildlife management work of average difficulty in the implementation of wildlife management practices in a moderate-sized wildlife area or facility; assists in the implementation of management practices in a large, complex wildlife area or facility; and performs related work as required.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: An employee in this class performs a variety of activities associated with the management of wildlife. Work involves wildlife habitat development and maintenance, public relations activities, facilities maintenance, and assisting in research data collection. This class differs from that of Wildlife Manager 2 in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for a larger, more complex wildlife area or management responsibilities.Other Requirements Implements or assists in implementing projects and programs to provide optimum wildlife habitat development; uses wildlife agricultural techniques involving trees, shrubs, grains, grasses, and other wildlife food and cover plantings and cuttings; controls burned and flooded land areas; restocks area lands and lakes with fish and wildlife. Provides information to the public pertaining to hunting, fishing, boating, and associated recreational activities; manages field trials and hunts on wildlife areas; gives talks and lectures on wildlife conservation to school groups and other interested individuals. Maintains and repairs equipment and buildings within assigned work area; constructs outbuildings, checking stations, docks, and signs; performs maintenance, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work; builds and maintains primitive roads and trails. Conducts a variety of data collection surveys to assist in determining environmental changes and wildlife conditions; conducts browse, mast, and creel surveys, and collects water and fish samples; traps and bands game; determines age, sex, and weight of harvested game and fish. Develops and manages sharecrop contracts with local farmers; assists surrounding landowners with problems on farm ponds and with troublesome wild animals; coordinates plans and activities with federal personnel on jointly managed wildlife areas. Assists in patrol and law enforcement duties on wildlife management areas; issues citations and appears in court. Prepares and monitors budget; orders supplies and equipment; sells permits and licenses. Prepares and maintains records and reports on daily activities, wildlife survey data, sales of permits and licenses, expenditures and budget status, arrests and prosecutions, and equipment usage. Each test content area has been designed to assess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the job of Wildlife Manager 1.Wildlife Management - The questions in this section assess knowledge of general wildlife management practices and specific techniques pertaining to birds, waterfowl, and game animals. As a Wildlife Officer or Manager with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, you must be familiar with both native and migratory birds, small and big game animals, and non-game or protected species in order to plan and develop food plots and suitable habitat. Knowledge of game animals, birds, and waterfowl is essential to the enforcement of related wildlife laws. (44 questions)Fisheries Management – The questions in this section assess knowledge of general fisheries practices and techniques. Wildlife Officers and Managers routinely sample streams and waterways to measure reproduction rates and species development. Knowledge of fish and fish species are essential to the enforcement of related fishery laws. (27 questions)Boating Safety - The questions in this section assess knowledge of safe boating practices. As a Wildlife Officer or Manager you will be instructing adults and juveniles in the proper care and use of boating equipment and will have daily contact with sportsmen and boaters using such equipment. Some Wildlife Officers or Managers are required to patrol the waterways of Tennessee by operating a watercraft. Two additional days of sick leave may be granted to provide a total of five days absence for this purpose. Family Medical Leave Allows up to twelve work weeks of leave* each year to eligible employees for certain family and medical reasons. Vested members of TCRS become eligible for service retirement upon completion of 30 years of creditable service or upon attainment of age 60. Deferred Compensation Employees may choose to make pre-tax contributions to a variety of investment options through the 401(k) plan or the 457 plan. A minimum $20 monthly contribution is required to participate in the plans. For the 401(k) plan, the state will match the $50 per month minimum contribution. The $50 match policy is evaluated on an annual basis. Flexible Benefits Plan Under this program certain specific expenses (e.g.,medical and dental insurance premiums, medical expenses, dependent day care expenses) can be deducted from an employee's paycheck prior to taxes, resulting in a lower taxable income level. Higher Education Fee Discounts and Waivers A 25% discount on undergraduate tuition at any state operated institution of higher learning in Tennessee is available to children 23 years of age or under of full time state employees. In addition, full-time state employees with six months of continuous service are eligible to have tuition fees waived for one course per semester at a state institution.
