Assistant Chief Wastewater Operator

Join the City of Essex Junction as the Assistant Chief Wastewater Operator and help ensure our essential wastewater systems operate efficiently. In this role, you will handle the daily operations and maintenance of the City’s wastewater treatment facility and pump stations, taking on both routine and advanced technical tasks. This position offers the opportunity to work independently, demonstrate technical expertise, and provide essential support when the Chief Operator is unavailable. After that, you are only responsible for the next 20%, which is not more than $600 for single plans and no more than $1200 for all other plans for covered medical expenses100% employer paid for dental and vision100% employer paid short term disability and life insuranceQualified Employer for Public Service Student Loan Forgiveness ProgramEssential Duties and ResponsibilitiesReasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.Assist in planning, supervising, and coordinating daily wastewater treatment facility operationsMonitor, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, pipes, tanks, gauges, and electrical systemsPerform inspections, maintenance, and diagnostic work at pump stationsApply advanced knowledge of control systems including SCADA, variable frequency drives, human machine interfaces, heating, and ventilation systemsPerform and review laboratory testing to ensure daily, weekly, and permit complianceAssist the Chief Operator with administrative tasks, reporting, and special projectsMaintain accurate electronic and paper records related to operations, maintenance, and complianceSupport construction projects and special initiatives, including ordering materials and suppliesAssist with building and grounds maintenance such as cleaning, painting, snow removal, and lawn careRespond to and assist with operational emergenciesFollow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment, confined space protocols, and lock out tag out proceduresReceive and manage chemical deliveriesServe as Acting Chief Operator when the Chief Operator is absentResearch regulatory updates and technical developmentsReview and update facility operating proceduresInterpret technical drawings, engineering documents, and operations and maintenance manualsParticipate in an on call rotation that includes weekend and after hours coverageMinimum QualificationsVermont State Grade 4 Wastewater Operator Certification or ability to obtain within six months of hireBroad technical knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, regulations, and standardsStrong mechanical aptitude with experience maintaining and repairing pumps and plumbing systemsAbility to troubleshoot control systems and electrical componentsUnderstanding of microbiology and ability to perform laboratory testingStrong problem solving skillsProficiency in reading, writing, and basic mathAbility to work independently and as part of a teamValid driver’s license with a good driving recordConfined Space CertificationAbility to reside within 60 minutes of the City of Essex JunctionRequired Education and ExperienceHigh School diploma or GED plus 4 years of relevant wastewater experience or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.Preferred Education And ExperienceEffective communication skillsExperience working as part of a teamSupervisory experienceTwo or four year college degree or certificate in a relevant fieldThe City of Essex Junction embraces and is committed to diversity and equal opportunity.
