Coatings Chemist
Crafco, Inc. is seeking a Coatings Chemist at our New Corporate Office & Lab Facility in Phoenix, AZ.The Coatings Chemist is responsible for product development, formulations, specification development, performance studies and improvements, quality oversight, manufacturing process and product improvements, for Crafco sealcoat, coatings and paints. The Coatings Chemist must understand the plant systems and manufacture. The Coatings Chemist must have an extensive understanding of applicable specifications; required product performance characteristics; raw materials; experimental methods and have very good computer and communications skills.This position offers a competitive salary, and an excellent benefits package including Profit Sharing, Matching 401(k), Health, Life, Dental, Vision, Short- & Long-Term Disability, Holiday, Personal & Sick Pay, Maternity Leave and more.Key ResponsibilitiesProduct Development Duties:Lead technical development of products both new and improvements to current products.Communicate and interact with Crafco Product Manager, Sales and Marketing and customers to determine needed characteristics of desired products.Take the lead on projects and work with lab technicians on projects Identify appropriate raw materials needed to achieve desired characteristicsDesign and oversee studies to be performed by Crafco or outside sources to develop product formulationsDesign and oversee verification evaluations for developed productsDevelop manufacturing instructions and procedures at production plantsAssist in design and development of packaging materials and processes for products if neededWork with Quality Assurance to develop quality control procedures for raw materials and finished products for production plantsReport on progress at periodic engineering and management meetingsDevelop product specifications, test procedures, use instructions, and information for other literature as neededPut forth new and innovative product types that could be offered by the companyTechnical Support DutiesUnderstand Crafco/Ergon production capabilities and communicate on improvements and designUnderstand application procedures.Work with Product Manager to provide answers to customer questions and recommendations on product specifications, properties, performance, use, applicability, etc.Develop and deliver presentations on products or processes within the company and to customers or trade organizations as needed.Have a good understanding of competitive product characteristics and performance Participate in applicable trade and technical organizations Production Process DutiesOversee raw materials and finished product quality results at production plants to determine if adjustments in formulations or processes are neededEvaluate and recommend alternative raw material sources and types for use in productionEstablish working relationships with plant production and quality personnelMaintain up to date formulations and manufacturing instructions for assigned products at plants for assigned productsMonitor LIMS for Quality Data and act based on statisticsProduct And Process Improvement DutiesOptimize formulations considering specification conformance and production quality resultsDevelop plans and procedures to improve manufacturing processes as appropriateEvaluate new types of raw materials, formulations and production methods to improve product performance and/or reduce costsKeep aware and report on new technologies, raw materials, processes, and industry changes that may influence company products QualificationsBS degree in an appropriate scientific field Minimum of 3 year related work experience in coating productsMinimum 3 years related experience in product developmentWorking knowledge of email, Word, Excel and PowerPoint programsWorking knowledge of MRP systemsAbility for up to approximately 25% travel when neededAbility to lift 50 lbsMust have a clean driving recordAbout Crafco, Inc.Crafco, Inc. has delivered confidence through innovation, quality, and value to our customers since 1976.
