The Assistant Director of Student Engagement & Career Development will collaborate across the team to develop and deliver career services and student engagement programs designed to enhance the personal, career, and professional development of Carlson School undergraduates.

The Assistant Director of Student Engagement & Career Development will provide strategic leadership for all transition, engagement and career development student services, serving over 3,000 undergraduate students across 1:1 coaching, programming, and academic courses. This role will serve as an expert in current trends, best practices, and business student industry needs. The Assistant Director will also lead the curriculum and instruction team for BA1021: Design Your Life.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Assistant Director of Student Engagement & Career Development

Salary range: $68,000 - $75,000 depending on qualifications

Manage student engagement and career development strategy and staff to deliver world-class career, engagement, and transition experiences to Carlson School undergraduate students (40%)

* Collaborate with the Director of Student Engagement & Career Development to co-develop the SECD strategic mission to holistically support students of all identities at all points in the development process in their transition to, during, and away from Carlson.
* Develop, implement, and maintain programs and services for student engagement, student leadership development and lead the effort on initiating new programs and improving existing processes.
* Oversee, design, and execute strategies to manage key student transitions on behalf of the Carlson Undergraduate program, resulting in successful transitions for new first-year and transfer students, and a measurable increase in student development outcomes, specifically sense of belonging.
* Lead, set priorities, and provide direct supervision for SECD staff - including Transition Coordinator, Engagement Coordinator, Career Coach, student workers, and adjunct instructors.
* Provide day to day management and oversight to staff including mentoring/coaching to provide guidance on task and behavioral expectations, skills support, professional development, conflict competence, goal-setting, and feedback and ensuring a positive work environment.
* Benchmark and develop innovative student experiences including curriculum, workshops, and affinity group options to build a sense of community amongst Carlson students.
* Market SECD services through presentations at orientations, admissions events, social media, targeted e-mails, BSB Weekly, and other media.
* Collaborate with Corporate Relations to foster new and ongoing funding of student experiences.
* Collaborate with Alumni Relations to engage alumni volunteers as mentors, class speakers, and panelists for affinity group programming.
* Develop and manage an annual budget that clearly supports the strategic initiatives of student engagement and transition programs.
* Oversee data-informed decision-making processes to assess, benchmark, evaluate, report on, and iterate co-curricular, orientation and transition experiences outcomes, using feedback to continuously improve SECD programs.
* Collaborate with UG colleagues to lead and execute orientation programming for first-year and transfer students.

Curriculum coordination, adjunct management, and course instruction (25%)

* Manage BA1021: Design Your Life curriculum to deliver required first-year experience course for all undergraduate Carlson students. Lead SECD team in annual process of revising and updating coordinated curriculum, used across all sections of the course, including creation of a shared syllabus, Canvas, lesson plans, classroom presentation templates, and assignments.
* Partner with Associate Director and Director to create intentional and streamlined curriculum across both Design Your Life and Design Your Career courses.
* Recruit, hire, supervise, and develop all instructors for Design Your Life (21+ sections per year).
* Oversee recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, and general supervision of Crew Program student leaders, a diverse staff of 50-70 student peer mentors for incoming first-year students.
* Provide expert, engaging, and interactive instruction for two SECD courses annually including Design Your Life and Design Your Career. Oversee Teaching Assistant and grading for each section.
* Actively identify opportunities to weave topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion into the course curriculum.
* Develop innovative content, active learning techniques, classroom assessment strategies, and use of new technologies to engage students in the classroom.
* Build authentic relationships with students from varied backgrounds, perspectives, and identities, and utilize these relationships to holistically support students in navigating systemic barriers and achieving success.
* Develop and implement assessment of student learning outcomes and identify opportunities for growth and improvement.
* Engage in ongoing professional development and training related to best practices in teaching undergraduate students.
* Actively support students in achieving success throughout the course by tracking student progress and regularly communicating proactively with students who are at-risk of not passing.
* Manage budget for adjunct instructor and TA salaries as well as course supply costs.
* As need arises, offer independent study of Design Your Life course for students needing a 3rd+ attempt of the course.
* Evaluate and make decisions on course substitution requests.

Lead Student Support Programming and Provide Coaching to Students (25%)

* Partner with Associate Director and Director to create integrated engagement and career support strategy that leverages life design concepts.
* Oversee strategy, planning, and execution for SECD annual programs and events such as: Welcome Week College Day, Career Week, Career Treks, Business Week, Engagement Fairs, Women in Business Living Learning Community, First-Generation College Student Support, and more.
* Serve as primary collegiate partner for first-year parent programming, liaising between UG staff and UMN Parent Programs office advocating effectively for Carlson Undergraduate interests.
* Provide individual coaching appointments to Carlson undergraduate students including major and career exploration, community building, student organization involvement, resume-writing, interview prep, networking, offer evaluation/negotiation, and niche job search strategy.
* Serve as functional expert for careers in one area (ex: Investments & Capital Markets). Develop expertise about this career field including skills required for entry-level positions, key employers, selection methods, student and professional organizations affiliated with each function, national career opportunities, alumni connections, and specific needs of students in each function. Share insights, best practices, and ideas for developing this population of students with SECD team.
* Initiate and maintain relationships with key faculty, major advising partners, and Carlson Brands Enterprise. Develop strategic partnerships with student organizations affiliated with each function and partner to create programming or specialized services with each organization.
* Contribute expert understanding of students' and industry needs in conversations regarding business development, employer relations, and experiential learning endeavors for undergraduate students.
* Create career resources to serve students exploring and pursuing this career area. Content generation may include internal and external digital resources (ex: Key Career Info Sheets, handouts, videos, and alumni profiles).
* Develop career coaching policies for Carlson degree-seeking students, exchange students, Inter-College Program students, and Carlson BSB alumni.

Service and Special Projects (10%)

* Provide leadership on university-, college- and program-wide committees and initiatives related to student engagement and career development such as Leadership Educator and Scholars Network and Career Development Network.
* Sit on Undergraduate Program Committees and support the success of Undergraduate Program initiatives as requested.
* Actively advance the fields of student engagement and career development through ongoing professional development and scholarly activity to remain abreast of best practices and trends in student affairs, leadership education, and undergraduate business education.
* Represent the Student Engagement & Career Development team through presentations and staffing college wide events, such as new student orientation, admission/recruitment events, College Day, Career Fairs, Commencement, and more.
* Serve on Carlson School Undergraduate Program Stewardship Team, contributing to development and execution of consistent supervisory practices and team-wide policies/practices.
* Work on special projects as the need arises, at the request of the Director or Assistant Dean.

MINIMUM / ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor's degree in student affairs, higher education, or related field, plus at least six years of experience, or a master's degree plus at least four years of relevant experience.
* Minimum of 3-5 years of related work experience with undergraduate students.
* Strong presentation and oral communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / SELECTION CRITERIA:

* 5-7 years of related work experience with undergraduate students.

PPIA is a national nonprofit that cultivates the next generations of diverse public service and international affairs professionals by investing in their education, essential skills, and networks to effect domestic and global change. PPIA's flagship program is the Junior Summer Institute (JSI), a rigorous, academic, fully-funded fellowship program for undergraduate college students from underrepresented backgrounds. This position is administered through the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus.Position DescriptionThe Executive Director reports directly to the PPIA Board of Directors and Humphrey School leadership. The position also works with JSI host Directors, Directors of Admissions, Policy School leaders, and funders.The Executive Director leads PPIA's strategic direction under the direction of the board of directors and works in partnership with all affiliated PPIA organizations, alumni, and stakeholders. The position requires the ability to travel.The Executive Director is responsible for leading the development and implementation of PPIA's data strategy (e.g., access, collection, governance, management, reporting, evaluation, etc.), which underlies all aspects of the position below:External Relations and Communications - 25%Serve as the point of contact to cultivate, manage, and strengthen relationships with over 60 graduate schools throughout the PPIA Graduate School Consortium and attract new members.Advise the Alumni Advisory Committee to develop recommendations for the PPIA national office and board of directors that advance the organization's mission and professional development of PPIA alumni. Cultivate and support alumni chapters nationally.Supervise the Communications and Outreach Manager's projects to ensure alignment with PPIA's strategic goals. Oversee integration of communications and data systems that monitor and track engagement across all PPIA components, such as the Graduate School Consortium, alumni engagement, Junior Summer Institute application, and Public Service Weekends.Board and Organizational Management - 25%Lead the forthcoming strategic planning process with the board of directors, including selecting a consultant to facilitate the process. Collaborate with the PPIA Board of Directors to develop and implement the core activities of the PPIA National office, including developing new ideas, partnerships, and opportunities to strengthen PPIA's mission.Work with an external accountant to ensure the budget, income, and expenses align with the organization's financial goals and submit an annual 990 tax form.Manage and update online organizational platforms such as Guidestar, donor portal, employee matching programs, and alumni customer relationship management (CRM) system.Manage and supervise PPIA staff, including Communications & Outreach Manager, graduate assistants, interns, and contracted hires.Program Management and Event Planning - 25%Manage an annual graduate school admissions fair and employment exposition in Washington, D.C., with over 60 exhibitors and 500 attendees.Manage Public Service Weekend conferences from request for proposals through selection and execution of the events.Ensure the success of PPIA's flagship JSI program by managing and implementing key functions and support for the JSI and Consortium Member Schools nationally.Coordinate and implement marketing and outreach strategies that grow the JSI applicant pool, such as building relationships with key organizations and stakeholders, creating and implementing a marketing campaign, and evaluating the effectiveness of these strategies for continual improvement.Work closely with the PPIA Board of Directors on the planning and implementing of all programs and events throughout the year.Fundraising and Development - 25%Work with the PPIA Board of Directors to develop and execute a fundraising plan that increases financial support for the organization's mission, priorities, and programs.Manage existing sponsor and funder relationships and annual giving campaigns.Identify new funding streams and cultivate relationships with individual donors.QualificationsRequired Qualifications:BA or BS with at least six years of relevant/related experience.Strong writing and proofreading skills.Strong project management, organization, and multi-tasking skills.Experience initiating and setting goals for an organization.Solid analytical and problem-solving skills.Experience working effectively with individuals from diverse and marginalized communities, including specific experience with people of color, including underrepresented groups and new immigrant populations; American Indians; people with apparent and non-apparent disabilities; women; people of various gender and sexual identities and expressions.Ability to work independently, with strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.Experience in program evaluation and managing budgets.Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree with at least three years of relevant/related experience.Proven experience in nonprofit management.Experience cultivating donor relationships, fundraising, and grant writing.Board Governance and alumni engagement experience.Program management, leadership, and facilitation.Experience developing, implementing, evaluating, and leading diversity programs.New to add key skills and minimum qualifications.BenefitsWorking at the UniversityAt the University of Minnesota, you'll find a flexible work environment and supportive colleagues who are interested in lifelong learning.
