  • DepartmentFACILITY OPERATIONS-IUB (BL-PHYP-IUBLA)Department InformationCapital Planning and Facilities (CPF) plans, creates, maintains, and preserves Indiana University's beautiful, functional, and sustainable campuses.
  • The units that make up the office work together to support excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement across all IU campuses.
  • The office also serves as a liaison with the state of Indiana for all capital projects, including the Capital Appropriations Request, the state approval process for capital projects, and the various capital and space utilization reports required by the state.
  • A unit of CPF, Utility Operations comprising Utility Distribution, Utility Information Group, and Utility Production manages all utilities on campus, including electricity, steam heating, chilled water, drinking water, sanitary sewer, and storm water, and provides utility locating and documentation for all campuses.

  • Job SummaryDepartment-Specific Responsibilities:Builds complex multi-layer maps in GIS software to record utility systems asset locations and attributes across campus.
  • Assists with the construction of new base map layers and attribute data using GPS, flyovers, as-built and construction documents.
  • Assists with GIS database administration for base map and utilities layers when necessary.
  • Fills requests for specialized maps or asset information as needed.
  • Responsible for GPS and documentation of base map and utilities updates on regional campuses when requested.
  • General Responsibilities: Verifies the location of and mark utility systems for current and future construction projects or when utility systems information is requested.
  • Prepares and maintains damage prevention permits and maps for contracted locators and verify completion, distribute permits as required.
  • Performs leak detection and water quality testing; utilizes necessary tools to assist in sub-surface locating of valves, manholes and access panels.
  • Utilizes survey-grade GPS equipment, sUAS, lasers, infra-red camera and digital cameras to map utility systems as repair and replacement work is occurring as well as during new construction projects.
  • Sketches and documents all changes to each campus utility using photos, GPS points, laser measurements and contractor redlines.
  • Responsible for the preparation and completion of all documentation to be utilized by GIS Tech to update GIS database and maps.
  • Works with regional campuses in the collection and documentation of base map and utilities updates when requested.
  • Ensures the completion of work assignments in a safe, efficient, and cost effective manner within specified time frames.
  • Complies with all safety policies and University and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Responds to emergency situations immediately and works quickly to correct issues.
  • Maintains availability for overtime work and/or on-call duties as assigned.
  • Performs other utility-related work as needed or assigned.
  • Some experience with Indiana 811 Dig Safe permitting process.
  • LICENSES AND CERTIFICATESRequired Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.
  • Locator certification upon hire.
  • Damage Prevention Competency certification upon hire.
  • 3 years of experience using GIS software.
