  • Responsible for investigating, resolving and rejecting issues that arise during the test entry portion (preanalytical phase) of processing specimens.
  • Issues are received, tracked and addressed immediately so that processing of specimens with issues can occur in a timely manner.
  • Staff is also responsible for the pre-analytical process in the laboratory which includes specimen bag opening, test data entry, aliquoting, centrifugation, batching and racking.
  • This is a multi-faceted position and requires great flexibility, attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • The following are intended to be examples of the accountabilities for which the person in this position is responsible.
  • This position description is not intended to be complete or all-inclusive and does not preclude management from assigning additional or related functions if such functions are a logical assignment for the position.
  • Investigating/resolving/rejecting pre-analytical specimen issues identified by Laboratory Specimen Processors or Lab staff.
  • Document and ensure all information is properly routed to Client Services.
  • Inventory Control of all specimens placed on Hold Testing.
  • Ensure that each issue identified is handled/resolved in accordance with the current SOP.
  • Processes all finalized resolutions received from Client Services in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for accurately distinguishing colors in specimens and documenting the issue into Millennium Laboratory Information System (MLIS).
  • Ensure all specimens that receive final resolution are accessioned, aliquoted and prepared for testing through appropriate channels (i.e., Hamilton and Olympus).
  • Specimen bag opening.
  • Lifting 40lbs over-head intermittently to place Urine Specimens onto transport carts.
  • Intermittent sitting and standing for up to 8 hours or more.
  • Fine motor manipulation for 8 hours including upper extremity gripping and grasping.
  • Reaching and extending arms, twisting cups and tearing packages.
  • Initial data entry of tests ordered into Millennium Laboratory Information System (MLIS) as requested by practices/accounts.
  • Ensure correct labels are affixed to requisitions, demographic cover sheet and test tubes (when applicable) and specimen container.
  • Validate requisitions against specimens prior to scanning and entering practice information and tests to ensure that the ID numbers and names match.
  • Confirm that all practice and in-house accession numbers and specimen IDs are validated.
  • Aliquot, centrifuge, batch and rack specimens in preparation for testing.
  • Ensure that all specimens are moved throughout laboratory in a safe, efficient manner.
  • Responsible for accurate validation of requisitions against specimens prior to scanning and entering practice information and tests.
  • Ensures correct labels are affixed to requisitions, test tubes and specimens.
  • Demonstrate effective communication for product movement throughout the laboratory.
  • Must be knowledgeable and aware of cross-contamination potentials and bring occurrences to Supervisors attention immediately for correction.
  • Able to maintain a clean and organized work station at all times.
  • Clean and maintain the laboratory and all equipment.
  • Complete daily housekeeping per company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Manage the waste produced by the pre-analytical processes as well as keep the lab free of debris and trash at all times.
  • Demonstrates understanding of HIPAA laws and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates understanding of companys safety practices.
  • Demonstrates awareness of safety issues and demonstrates consistent work practices at all times.
  • Perform all responsibilities in accordance with company policies, SOPs, regulatory standards and regulations and accrediting agencies, including the proper wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Remains aware of evolving business needs and opportunities, showing flexibility in doing whatever is appropriate to support the companys success.
  • Pursues educational opportunities to maintain advanced and up-to-date knowledge of HIPAA, safety, SOP and all other issues related to the Specimen Resolution Lab Team.
  • Exercises influence and takes collaborative action to proactively coordinate efforts between other departments.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment in the face of adverse conditions to effectively resolve specimen issues.
  • Able to prioritize workload and exhibit a sense of urgency when approaching deadlines
  • Ensures best utilization of resources and effective achievement of results by bringing together everyones contribution to the achievement of the department and company goals.
  • Establishes strong organizational skills in order to function effectively in a fast-paced environment utilizing teamwork, integrity and accountability.
  • Knowledge of developing a working partnership with upper management as well as cross department management teams.
  • Performs all other related duties as required and assigned and understands that the items in this description are not all-inclusive.
  • High school diploma or GED minimum requirement Associates degree preferred
  • Previous data entry, medical transcribing experience highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in a laboratory highly desirable.
  • Must possess strong written and verbal communication and active listening skills
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively handle multiple and shifting priorities without having an adverse effect on specimen processing
  • Must have strong computer skills in MS Office with the ability to learn company laboratory information system in a timely manner.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks
  • Must be able to type accurately with good keyboard pace and the ability to interpret high volumes of information correctly.
  • Must be dependable, punctual.
  • Must be flexible to work varied hours due to business needs.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with all levels of management.
  • Attention to detail with high degree of accuracy.
  • Proficient in MS office applications (Outlook, Work, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Work in a repetitive environment at a fast pace.
  • Ability to work independently as well within a team environment.
  • This position will require the following physical requirements: sitting (40%), walking (20%), standing (40%) and lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Physical requirements will vary depending on departmental needs.
  • The employee is expected to read and understand SOPs.
  • The employee should be able to convert SOP instructions into work-related tasks.
  • The employee must be able to perform simple calculations as required in SOPs.
  • The employee must be able to use judgment when there is a deviation in the system and effectively communicate any discrepancy to his/her Supervisor.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to a fast-paced environment, therefore must be able to thrive in this type of setting.
  • Withstand moderate amounts of stress and the ability to work in an environment where the noise level is usually moderate.
  • Must be able to work an extended schedule as needed.
  • Due to occupational work with saliva/oral swab specimens, there is a low risk of exposure to tuberculosis.
  • As part of Millennium Healths Tuberculosis Exposure Plan, all laboratory personnel have the opportunity to be screened for tuberculosis free of charge.
