  • This role requires continuous coordination of production-related activities, workforce planning, employee relations, and effective communication in order to meet production, quality and cost objectives, leading the day-to-day Shipping and Material handling operations.
  • As a member of the Plant Leadership Team, you will act as a mentor and coach for front line supervisors in both departments.
  • The successful candidate will be an energetic leader with the ability to consistently train, develop, motivate and coach team members.
  • The Shipping and Material Handling Manager will provide front-line leadership and direction for Safety, Quality, Service, Productivity, Cost Reduction and People objectives within an assigned area of the facility while meeting internal and external customer needs.
  • As part of our team, this individual will operate under general mentorship from Plant Leadership to ensure execution of daily operational efficiencies, implementation of key business objectives and leadership of key people initiatives.
  • Essential Functions May Include, But Are Not Limited To
  • Provide vision and direction to increase organizational capability and deliver process excellence on a consistent basis.
  • Provide daily leadership to instill and reinforce an injury-free workplace and environmental compliance.
  • Perform general management duties, exercising usual authority concerning staff, performance appraisals, promotions and terminations.
  • Act as a team role model and change-agent.
  • Positively lead and influence team members to partner together to achieve individual and business goals.
  • Model and promote the Corporation’s Code of Business Ethics and Values
  • Regard safety as a core value: Lead the efforts to build a safety conscious environment; be actively involved and take a leadership role in safety initiatives.
  • Responsible for key operational measures within the business unit (service, quality, productivity, cost, safety); able to measure performance of team against performance targets and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with other functional areas to resolve problems and develop improved manufacturing processes.
  • Maintain all timekeeping, overtime and vacation records and schedules.
  • Respond to and correct material flow issues.
  • Handle staffing to economically meet business requirements and create cross training opportunities.
  • Train and provide development opportunities for staff.
  • Ensure annual goals are complete and communicated.
  • Ensure Performance Review system is up to date and regular feedback is provided to staff members.
  • Regularly train/motivate/coach/develop team members.
  • Responsible for training and development of staff, estimating resource/labor needs, assigning work, meeting completion dates, interpreting and ensuring consistent application of organizational policies.
  • Develop/maintain work instructions/training records to ensure compliance.
  • Build and maintain a sustainable process.
  • Provide leadership for improvement activities including Enterprise Lean Sigma (ELS).
  • Lead initiatives to identify and reduce manufacturing waste and process complexity.
  • Lead 5S activities, housekeeping, and recycling programs.
  • Ensure inventory accuracy through consistent cycle counting throughout the warehouse.
  • Provide backup support to all other job functions as needed.
  • Operations / Productivity Initiatives
  • Lead, coordinate and assist in day to day team operations ensuring effective communication.
  • Assist in establishing annual budgets for manufacturing, including overtime, supplies and equipment expenditures.
  • Review and correct cost variances researching issues and putting corrective measures in place.
  • Lead Team Managers (Shipping and Material Handling) in the implementation and administration of company policies and procedures.
  • Participate in production and plant leadership team (PLT) meetings; communicating goals/objectives/priorities to the team.
  • Support the development and implementation of Safety, Quality, Service, Productivity, Cost and Continuous Improvement Programs.
  • Leadership / Development Initiatives
  • Advise and coach all direct reports.
  • Lead Production teams in achievement of production requirements.
  • Promote and maintain a collaborative working relationship with the workforce.
  • Support performance management activities – including performance assessment, objective setting, and developmental planning for hourly manufacturing employees.
  • Establish performance and development plans for Shift Team Managers, establishing SMART performance objectives that can be measured.
  • Ensure effective training of new employees and ongoing cross-training and development of existing employees, including apprentice operators.
  • Assist Team Managers in the management of employee relations, including corrective action, employee conduct, and performance.
  • Continuous Improvement / ELS Initiatives
  • Drive standard work and 5S Initiatives throughout the organization.
  • Support the implementation of ELS (Enterprise Lean Sigma) and Six Sigma initiatives, including employee training.
  • Manage Material Damage and Inventory Adjustment losses.
  • Safety Training Initiatives
  • Act as safety champion and provide safety leadership through modeling appropriate behavior and adherence to all safety policies and processes.
  • Provide training, quarterly reviews and support to the safety team as needed.
  • Conduct accident investigations as needed.
  • Work with Occupational Health Nurse to handle return to work/workforce restrictions as appropriate.
  • Minimum Education Required
  • Certifications/Security Clearances/Other (Enter Below)
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 6+ years Operations/Manufacturing experience with 3+ manufacturing leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience in shipping environment highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in leading individuals and teams.
  • Comfort in modern manufacturing, material flow and improvement strategies (e.g. ELS, continuous flow, cellular etc.)
  • and the ability to integrate those into the operation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of financial systems and the key drivers within the manufacturing environment.
  • Strong organizational skills in strategy, communication at all levels and execution.
  • Ability to lead, contribute, and influence others in a team-based organization
