  • Residential Counselor (Live-In Position)
  • Boys Hope Girls Hope of NY is a non-profit, college preparatory urban boarding program that is committed to helping academically capable and motivated students reach their potential by providing them with a stable living environment, academic enrichment, and support services to ensure their success through high school and beyond.
  • BHGHNY scholars are motivated young men and women who are demonstrated leaders and exhibit a genuine desire to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
  • We partner with Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School located in Fort Green, Brooklyn and Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School located in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.
  • In conjunction with the Dean and Residential staff, the Residential Counselor will assist with maintaining a safe and healthy environment for all scholars.
  • A residential counselor is responsible for guiding and providing all scholars with their basic needs and other resources to support them in their daily living.
  • Residential counselors' duties include maintaining the safety of the community by organizing productive and engaging community activities, updating the scholars of any changes and policies in the community, and resolving conflicts by counseling and understanding each scholar’s differences.
  • Program Home Operations
  • Establish, maintain and coordinate the residence routine and schedules to provide high expectations, structure, stability, and guidance for the benefit of the scholars.
  • Ensure that regular and effective residential meetings and evening meditations are conducted.
  • In collaboration with the Dean, ensure that the home operates according to all BHGH National Standards and State of New York Residential Licensing Standards.
  • Residential Staff and Community Volunteer Supervision
  • Mentor the other residential staff members and provide input to the Dean regarding the annual evaluation process for each of them.
  • Facilitate regular staff meetings, foster effective staff communication and coordination, and ensure that each member of the team has the information they need to effectively fulfill his or her responsibilities.
  • Delegate staff duties for the benefit of the residence and the program.
  • Supervise volunteers as they carry out service with the scholars and provide regular feedback to the Dean.
  • In every aspect of scholar and residential home life, to engage each scholar in their own holistic development so that they become increasingly responsible, self-sufficient, and skilled as they prepare for college life and independent living.
  • Oversee quarterly service planning, monthly progress meetings, and all aspects of behavioral and crisis intervention and ensure that thorough and prompt documentations are maintained.
  • Assist Dean with maintaining fire drill documentation and medical records.
  • Contribute to and uphold the established admissions and communications policies and procedures.
  • Communicate the admissions process to parents of admitted students ensuring they are well informed on program events and policies.
  • Coordinate and conduct tours of the program and other activities for prospective students and their parents.
  • Assist in tracking admission activity data as prospective students progress through the application process.
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively with adolescents, their guardians or parents, co-workers and supervisors, teachers and other audiences verbally and in writing
  • Active and empathetic listener, with ability to give full attention to a child, co-worker, parent, or others
  • Ability to influence others, especially teens, in positive, appropriate ways
