  • The Enzyme Engineering team is responsible for the identification and improvement of enzymes, including mutagenesis library design and construction as well as purification, characterization, and screening/selection of engineered variants for the cost-advantaged production of chemicals using microorganisms.
  • The Enzyme Engineering Team is seeking a detail-oriented Scientist I to design enzyme mutagenesis libraries, develop and perform enzyme activity assays, and kinetically characterize purified enzymes in order to select improved variants for Genomatica’s production processes.
  • In addition, he or she will assist in cloning, expression, and bacterial growth procedures to enable said enzyme characterization.

  • Develop deep understanding of enzymes of interest and work with department and project teams to develop engineering strategies and tactics.
  • Design enzyme mutagenesis libraries using structural information when available.
  • Develop enzyme screening assays and use these assays to characterize enzyme variants to assess suitability for metabolic pathways.
  • Work with automation scientists to adapt biochemical assays to robotic platforms to enable high throughput screening to identify improved variants from primary screens for follow-up analysis in secondary screens and kinetic characterization.
  • Analyze data using statistical methods to inform future rounds of mutagenesis.
  • Maintain knowledge of current enzyme engineering methods and literature.
  • Support Intellectual Property Filings and interact with IP team.
  • Qualifications & Experience
  • The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required in order satisfactorily perform in this role.
  • PhD in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Molecular Biology, or related scientific field with 0-2 years post-graduate experience.
  • Master’s with 6-8 years post-graduate experience, or Bachelor’s with 8 or more years of post-graduate experience
  • Experience and knowledge requirements
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Relevant laboratory skills as demonstrated by academic and/or industrial research experience.
  • Deep understanding of enzyme mutagenesis library design principles and methods.
  • Experience with computational/rationally informed library design is preferred.
  • Proficiency in statistics, data processing, and experimental design.
  • Experience with protein expression, purification, and characterization including determination of kinetic parameters.
  • Desirable experience in high throughput assay development and automation.
  • Good time management and desire to work in an environment where success is dependent upon teamwork and communication.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills (both written and oral).
