  • Job Description Title: Lead Process Engineer Department: Commercial Engineering & Technical Services Position Summary Genomatica develops commercial biobased processes to make widely-used chemicals that enable better, more sustainable everyday products.
  • That enables our partners and leading brands to offer better food packaging, auto parts, clothing, tires, carpets, and more.
  • We’ve commercialized processes for bio-BDO (for plastics) and for biobased butylene glycol (for cosmetics); and our technology drives the world’s first commercial-scale biobased plant for a major intermediate chemical.
  • We’re working on polyamide intermediates (nylon) and on butadiene (tires); and we’re helping numerous companies with their bioprocesses.

  • We seek a highly motivated Lead Process Engineer to lead commercial plant process design and engineering activities and provide technical licensing support in the field of biobased chemical processes.
  • Successful candidates will work with an agile team consisting of internal process technology and engineering experts, external engineering contractors, and consultants to develop technical proposals and Process Design Packages (PDPs) for Genomatica’s licensed processes.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills are a must as this position will interact internally with multiple functions such as R&D and externally with engineering contractors and both current and prospective business partners and licensees.
  • Candidates who can demonstrate previous high performance contributing to the development of Process Design Packages (FEL-2) and new capital construction projects for both petrochemical and industrial fermentation processes are desired.
  • This position can be located in San Diego, CA or based remotely in the United States with periodic travel to San Diego.

  • Acts as process engineering lead for assigned projects.
  • Serve as process engineering point of contact with external partners and licensees.
  • Participate in regular project interactions and review meetings.
  • Support plant start-up and performance testing.
  • Collaborate with internal process development team (R&D) facilitating their effective handover of technical basis of design packages which can be translated into project-specific deliverables.
  • Support execution of external 3rdparty engineering contractors to develop Process Design Packages.
  • Serve as Genomatica’s process engineering lead in contractor interactions.
  • Participate in key reviews of engineering contractor deliverables.
  • Ensure timely flow of information between parties.
  • Responsible for generation of process engineering deliverables, also providing support to other team members or external contractors.
  • Deliverables include, but are not limited to: Heat & Material Balances (HMBs) Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) P&ID development including operability and hazard reviews Equipment design calculations and process duty specifications Operation & Control Narratives During both the project development and execution phases ensure that activities maintain focus on the key success factors (e.g. safety, plant performance, capital cost, constructability, etc
  • Qualifications & Experience The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required in order satisfactorily perform in this role.
  • Education & Experience Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, or related field, and a minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience, particularly in project execution and plant operations.
  • Candidates with Master’s or PhD degrees and similar relevant industry experience will be viewed favorably.
  • Knowledge Requirements Expert knowledge and understanding of chemical engineering principles and their application to chemical plant design, knowledgeable in several areas outside of immediate area of expertise.
  • Particularly knowledge in areas such as fermentation, distillation and purification is desirable.
  • Proficiency in chemical engineering modeling including kinetic models, unit operation models, and process flowsheet models in both steady state and dynamic simulation.
  • Experience using a variety of software tools (e.g. Aspen, Excel, Matlab, etc.)
  • Plant operations and petrochemical or bioprocess EPC experience preferred.
  • Experience in R&D support of process commercialization including preparation of technical Basis of Design and Process Design Packages.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the technical requirements of equipment and processes.
  • Strong knowledge in the field of environmental, health and safety (EH&S) regulations, standards, and practices and their impact on chemical process design and operations.
  • Competencies Demonstrated success leading engineering design and new capital projects for petrochemical and/or industrial fermentation processes.
  • In addition to leading these activities, must also have the ability to perform as an individual contributor for developing these engineering deliverables.
  • Ability to elicit cooperation from, and influence a wide variety of individuals, internal department heads, and third-party contractors/plant personnel.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, etc).
  • Strong negotiation and influence skills including working in a matrix organization, under ambiguity and in fast growing businesses.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with an ability to prioritize multiple projects, tasks and responsibilities.
  • Team player committed to success and getting the job done well.
  • Desire to learn new things, positive attitude, and enthusiasm.
