  • Founded in 1986, LA Conservation Corps (“the Corps”) has served over 30,000 young people in the community.
  • Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a key contributor to the organization’s success and sustainability by contributing to the accomplishment of the organization’s mission, business goals and vision.
  • The CDO will accomplish this by establishing new and maintaining current development resources that will identify and cultivate funding to sustain and grow the organization.
  • The CDO provides administrative guidance, development, and communications/branding support for the entire organization.
  • The CDO’s primary responsibility is to increase private revenue from individuals, corporations, foundations and manage fundraising special events.
  • The CDO develops the Corps’ Marketing strategy and oversees the Corps’ public relations efforts.
  • As a member of the Executive Management Team, the CDO works in partnership with senior leadership on all fundraising, development, marketing, and public relations activities.
  • This position currently supervises a Sr. Grant Writer and two (2) Development Coordinators.
  • Organizational Strategy & Leadership
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors and Development Committee members in developing the vision for the future and participating in strategic planning while speaking through the lens of a Development and Marketing expert.
  • Serve as a member of the Executive Management team, acting as a spokesperson for the agency at community events, partnership meetings and to the media.
  • Work with the Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors and Executive Management Team to assess institutional needs and priorities in the areas of fundraising and marketing.
  • Assist Board members and other key volunteers to fulfill their responsibilities as it relates to fundraising and communications.
  • Act as a liaison to the Development and Marketing Committee of the Board.
  • Development Team Leadership
  • Supervise staff responsible for donor database to effectively monitor prospect relations, track all donations, ensure accurate gift valuation and accounting, and acknowledge all contributions on a timely basis.
  • Create and oversee departmental and event budgets.
  • Design and lead the implementation of annual and long-term fund development plans to secure gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Develop comprehensive strategies to increase private philanthropy and fundraising for unrestricted donations for the organization as well as for donations that will fund the supportive services and education provided to program participants and other restricted projects.
  • Establish revenue goals, acquiring new sources of funding and conducting face-to-face meetings.
  • Develop the protocol for data management in Salesforce (donor database) that ensures data integrity over time.
  • Donor Stewardship & Event Management
  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward potential individual, foundation and corporate potential donors capable of giving $10,000 and more over time.
  • Organize donor campaigns and service projects with corporate partners and other stakeholders with the aim of developing a stewardship program that will create deeper ties with donors including volunteer recruitment for special projects
  • Research in-kind funding resources and establish and steward new partnerships.
  • Lead the planning and implementation of all special events, in-person and virtual, ensuring that goals for fundraising, attendance, marketing, and program are met and kept within budget.
  • Marketing & Communications
  • Develop and execute annual Development & Marketing Plans.
  • Plan and design year-end and other annual email and social media appeals.
  • Research, cultivate and execute unique cause marketing opportunities.
  • Establish vision and goals for annual communications calendar.
  • Write, edit and/or gather content for regular email newsletters, social media posts, annual reports, marketing collateral, website, special reports, speeches, and presentations.
  • Establish Corps’ storytelling principles and fundraising ethics.
  • Work with staff and Corpsmembers to generate content that creates authentic donor connections and supports employee and Corpsmember pride and morale.
  • Ensure quality control for all forms of external communications including crisis communications including collaborating with CEO and Administrative Officer on internal and external messaging.
  • Oversee a robust grants management program, with the support of Department staff, Compliance and Corps Directors, ensuring applications and reports are submitted on time and meet all necessary requirements.
  • Oversee Sr. Grant Writer collaborations with Deputy Director of Operations and Corps Directors on government grant writing.
  • Research grants and oversee the preparation and writing of the proposals.
  • Write grant proposals, applications and letters to corporate, foundation and government funders, as needed.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in fund development, marketing, and public relations experience, required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in business, philanthropy, marketing and communications, or related field and experience required, a master’s degree, preferred.
  • Ability to use interpersonal skills to build strong relationships with potential funders, board members, and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Comprehensive staff management skills, including experience building, mentoring and coaching a team of high-performing professionals, with a commitment to the continuous education and training of the development team.
  • In-depth and current knowledge of fundraising practices and procedures, with a strong understanding of donor management systems.
  • Experience in producing successful and meaningful special events.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity, understanding and the ability to effectively interact with individuals (internal and external) from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, disability and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to explain policies, procedures and directions and represent the Corps’ philosophy and values to a wide range of audiences including corpsmembers, programmatic staff, management and the public.
  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills with a passion for the Corps and ability to articulate its mission.
