  • Genomatica is seeking a highly motivated and creative Experimental Systems Biologist to join the Systems Bioengineering Group.
  • The primary objective of this group is to develop and advance key aspects of the company's core technology platform including various diagnostic bioengineering applications from model-driven experimental design to data-driven optimization of industrial bioprocesses for renewable chemical production.
  • The successful candidate for this position will develop and implement quantitative small-scale screening and physiological characterization of cell factories to deliver actionable insights to streamline strain-to-process optimization workflow using different host organisms depending on the target molecule.
  • She/he will also contribute to the development and application of custom experimental platforms for multi-omics assisted custom diagnostics and process-relevant physiology assessment.
  • The candidate will interface with multidisciplinary teams and play a role in the development of strain and process.
  • The successful candidate will have demonstrated proficiency in applying her/his technical knowledge and scientific creativity to develop innovative solutions in a team environment.

  • Design and execute quantitative small-scale experiments across multiple cultivation platforms such as well-plates and shake flasks for process-relevant physiology assessment.
  • Apply model-guided design and perform process relevant physiology assessment across platforms such as well plates, turbidostat, chemostat, etc.
  • Perform data analysis of QSS and diagnostic experiments combining multi-omics and fermentation data to provide biological context relevant for strain and fermentation process developments.
  • Coordinate experimental logistics and data review between multifunctional teams.
  • Prepare material for scientific presentation and consistently share results, experimental design, and execution plans with project teams and stakeholders.
  • May supervise and provide mentorship for other research personnel involved in executing quantitative small-scale experiments.
  • Qualifications & ExperienceThe requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required in order satisfactorily perform in this role.
  • EducationMaster's with 3-5 experience and/or PhD degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Microbiology or related field with 0-2 years related industrial experienceExperienceDirect relevant experience in microbial cultivation and physiology assessment with various cultivation platforms; may include post-doctoral experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum Competencies and SkillsExpertise in a chemical engineering, microbiology, fermentation, or metabolic engineering setting.
  • Proficiency in developing/applying experimental approaches for strain screening/evaluation and quantitative physiology.
  • Laboratory experience and understanding in microbial cultivation, quantitative physiology, metabolic engineering, etc.
  • Expertise in metabolic pathway profiling such as analyzing extracellular and intracellular flux distributions.
  • Expertise in fermentation as well as omics data analysis, and comfortable to combine fermentation results with metabolism to provide context-rich biological data interpretation.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to clearly and concisely convey objectives and results to a diverse audience including computational biologists, fermentation engineers, microbiologists, molecular biologists, and enzymologists.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced yet intellectually stimulating environment, creativity, independent thinking, analytical excellence, and passionDesirable Competencies and SkillsCandidates who can demonstrate previous high performance developing industrial fermentation processes are desired.
  • Expertise in isotope-based metabolic flux analysis with expert-level knowledge of modelling fundamentals of 13 C-labeling systems as well as relevant analytical data processing, e.g., mass spectrometry.
  • Basic understanding in chemical/biochemical engineering modeling for microbial cultures.
  • Strong data analysis and visualizations skills, attention to detail, and competent computer skills (Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, Spotfire, etc.)
