  • Summary This position is located in the Design Department, and reports to the Senior Architect, Designer, who reports to the Chief of Design.
  • The primary purpose of the work in this position is to support the designers, production coordinators, graphics staff with the design, organization and installation of exhibitions and National Gallery collections.
  • Responsibilities The incumbent: Assist designers and production coordinators in the organization of art layouts, the fabrication of 2D and 3D scaled maquettes of images or objects and scale models of architectural spaces and elements; and assists in art installation planning through the fabrication of 2D and 3D full-scale maquettes.
  • Assist designers in initial planning of exhibitions by assembling architectural scaled floor plans, digitally and/or physically and maquettes to aid curators and architects in preliminary design layout.
  • Assist production coordinators in preparing for exhibitions by assembling architectural plans that include images, lender information and approximate art layouts.
  • Organize and maintains architectural paper and digital drawing files to allow designers and production coordinators to easily obtain past exhibition information.

  • Physical Requirements: The work demands a great deal of manual dexterity to fabricate models and mock-ups using tools such as mat cutters, x-acto blades and hot glue guns.
  • The incumbent will also need to be able to load heavy rolls of paper into the plotters and work on multiple tasks in various locations throughout the East and West Buildings and the Sculpture Garden, especially when installations of art are occurring.

  • Qualifications Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the next lower grade or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector.
  • Specialized Experience Statement: Candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the federal GS-6 level, digitally retrieving, scaling and organizing detailed digital images for projects; and fabricating 2D and 3D maquettes and models requiring manual dexterity using a variety of artistic techniques and materials to support the organization and installation of art exhibitions.
